Christmas Eve
He reckoned that September 11 is a fashionable topic to talk about; we can translate the day's effect to air travel, to holidays, consumer spending patterns, work morale, and of course, to Christmas. And why wouldn't it be on our minds? It affected almost everyone even if not necessarily in the same way. Pardon me for being fashionable ...
I'm a little disturbed that the Time magazine caved in and picked Rudolf Giuliani over Bin Laden for its Person of The Year. I thought that the criteria for the "honour" was the person who most influenced world media during the year. This smells like unfairness, like the inability to cope with truth even if it's ugly, like - hey, let's change the rules so that this guy we don't like can't play our game.
I read somewhere recently - and as usual, I can't quite remember where - that in the Dark Ages, or back in Medieval times, people were much more well-equipped to live alongside darkness and evil. Today, we prefer to whitewash our society - or perhaps give the impression of being in the act - as if this is truly a good and healthy thing. If darkness does not exist, how can we know what light is? If evil does no exist, how can we glean a definition of what is good?
The streets were eerily quiet today. The cars in parking lots seemed lost and embarrassed at the abundance of empty spaces. The stations were silent, the train was barely half-full. It took me until the afternoon to realise that people have simply been spirited away by the lure of last-minute gift-buying and have disappeared into shopping centres and retail districts.
Tomorrow we visit some relatives for Christmas lunch. I'd bought an amazing array of fruits for a fruit salad, and I guess I'll be spending a good part of the morning slaving away with a knife and a chopping board. Regardless of how this entry sounds, it will be an act of love. ;)
Happy Christmas.
